Jumbo gym draws athletes Downtown: Physically fit flock to Chelsea Piers for lap pool, classes, and café

They’re pumped up!

Fitness fanatics have a new favorite sweat spot Downtown, where the massive Chelsea Piers gym that opened last week is already attracting athletes who like to have a good time while they get in shape, according to a bigwig.

“We deliver experiences that motivate our members to achieve their goals, but allow them to have fun in the process,” said Bryan Jarrett, who oversees group-fitness programs at the facility.

The two-floor gym, which takes up most of Schermerhorn Street between Bond and Nevins streets, is packed with different options for getting fit, including turf pitches for cardio training, a 75-foot lap pool, weight-training equipment, and studios for spin, pilates, and yoga classes.

Patrons who cough up $330 for the first and last months of an annual membership that costs another $165 a month for the remaining 10 receive full access to the gym as well as a separate lounge space, steam and sauna rooms, and an in-house café where they can purchase healthy snacks.

And Brooklynites on a budget can still get in on the action through free workouts Chelsea Piers trainers are hosting in the borough, which include yoga sessions in Fort Greene Park on Saturdays through Oct. 13, and weekly runs for joggers that begin at the gym Saturday mornings at 9 am.

The facility’s leaders hope their new location and complementary classes will build a loyal local following more than 20 years after Chelsea Piers opened its flagship spot in Manhattan, according to the general manager of the Brooklyn gym, who took home a silver medal in fencing at the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing.

“We’re dedicated to serving our local community,” said Keeth Smart.
