Benefits of Sauna and Steam Room
September 29, 2022
There’s nothing better than ending a workout in the sauna and/or steam room, relaxing in your towel and sweating it out. Before we jump into the benefits of the sauna and steam room, let’s walk you through some basics about the two.
What is the difference?
A sauna uses dry heat typically with temperatures around 190 degrees, with low humidity whereas a steam room is a bit cooler in temperature, with much more humidity making it seem hotter than a sauna.
What duration is recommended?
Everyone’s body is different. However, most people typically stay in a sauna or steam room for about 5-30 minutes. Like a workout, or anything you do, your body can get accustomed to longer durations in the high heat the more frequently you go.
Are there any downfalls?
As long as you are hydrating properly, you shouldn't have any negative effects, but we do want to stress the importance of hydration especially when in a high heat environment. If you are in either the steam or sauna for a long period of time, we recommend that you take breaks to hydrate.
What are the benefits?
- Stress relief
Both the steam room and sauna provide a sense of relaxation. It’s a place to zone out and destress. Whether you’re in there for 10 minutes, or 30 minutes, try to sit down, close your eyes and be mindful and stay present in the moment. - Improved Mood
This goes along with stress relief. When you are destressed from a long day at work, you are able to feel the weight lifted off your shoulders and a sense of happiness. It is important to take time for yourself to lift your spirits and forget about all the day-to-day distractions. - Improved Circulation
Increased body temperature leads to increased heart rate and improved circulation. - Recovery
The steam room and sauna are great for recovery, as it will loosen any sore muscles after an intense workout. It can also help relieve joint pain. - Skin health
Not only do you feel better, but you look better! After sitting in the sauna or steam room, you will notice your skin will start to glow. This is because the heat keeps your blood flowing and firms up your skin.
