DARIEN SISTERS WIN BOTH THE GU19 AND GU13 NATIONAL JUNIOR TITLES

(Stamford, CT – March 29, 2017) – Chelsea Piers Connecticut Squash players, Marina and Lucie Stefanoni of Darien, C.T., made history at the Junior National Championship claiming both the U19 and U13 Junior National Champion Titles. The Championship was held at Harvard University from March 17 – 19, 2017.

Marina had previously won the U19 Junior National Title in 2016. At only fourteen years old, Marina is the youngest junior champion in U.S. history to win two consecutive national titles. She remained undefeated throughout the entire tournament and defeated two seeded Grace Doyle of Dedhamm M.A., in three games to clinch the title. Marina’s younger sister, Lucie, defeated 2nd seed Molly Stoltz of Bronxville, N.Y. in 5 games.

At last year’s Junior National Championships, Fourth-seeded Stefanoni took down top-seeded Mariam Kamal in the semifinals. Kamal had defeated Stefanoni in all three of their previous encounters. In her final match, Stefanoni defeated first-time finalist Chloe Chemtob—whom she had beaten in two out of three encounters that season before the final—and took the final four games to win her first U19 national title,

“We are incredibly proud of Marina and Lucie and everything they have accomplished on the court thus far.” Chelsea Piers Connecticut Squash Director, Natalie Grainger, commented. “At such young ages, they are already very accomplished players with immeasurable potential. With their enthusiasm, professionalism and love of the game, I am confident they will both do great things in their squash careers. We are excited to see what the Stefanoni girls will achieve next.”
