CPCT PLAYER MARINA STEFANONI WINS GOLD FOR USA IN TEAM EVENT AND SQUASH COACH NAYELLY HERNANDEZ WINS SILVER FOR MEXICO IN WOMEN’S DOUBLES
(Stamford, CT – November 4, 2016) – The Chelsea Piers Connecticut Squash Program had impressive showings at the 2016 Pan American Squash Championships with U.S. Junior Champion Marina Stefanoni winning gold for U.S.A. in the women’s team event and Coach Nayelly Hernandez winning silver for Mexico in the women’s doubles event.
Since its inception in 1991, this was the first Pan American Championships to be held in the United States. Also referred to as the Pan American Federation Cup, the week-long competition concluded with the team championships at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.
The U.S. women swept both Chile and top-seeded Colombia to reach the final where they met Mexico. Victories from Stefanoni and Mariam Kamal, whom Stefanoni defeated this year in the U.S. Junior semifinals, earned the U.S. a 2-1 victory over the two seeds and gold medals.
Chile's Giselle Delgado and Anita Pinto won the women's doubles gold, beating Mexico's Luz Sarahi Lopez Dominguez and Hernandez 11-8, 6-11, 11-10. Hernandez also made the quarter-finals in the women’s individual event.
The Pan American Squash Federation includes nations in the Caribbean, North, Central and South America. The tournament format has seven gold medals total in men’s and women’s individual championships, men’s, women’s and mixed doubles championships, and men’s and women’s team championships.
