Chelsea Piers Connecticut Launches Field Hockey Club Partners with Area Legends Mo Minicus & Emily Townsend Prince
August 2, 2018
(Stamford, CT – August 2, 2018) - Chelsea Piers is pleased to announce the inaugural season of Chelsea Piers Field Hockey Club under the leadership of Coaches Mo Minicus and Emily Townsend Prince. Chelsea Piers Field Hockey will span the spectrum of field hockey training from learn-to-play youth programs, to indoor leagues and competitive club teams.
“We are pleased to welcome Coach Minicus and Coach Townsend Prince to the Chelsea Piers Connecticut team” shared Greta Wagner, Executive Vice President Chelsea Piers Connecticut. “When we set out to create our elite Field Hockey Club, we knew Mo and Emily were the best coaches to help develop a top-notch program where players compete at the highest level and are prepared to compete in college”
The head coaching duo of Mo Minicus and Emily Townsend Prince promises to build a foundational field hockey program that develops the complete athlete, focusing on athletics, teamwork, character and academics to create the most successful high school and collegiate players.
Coach Minicus, a stand-out two sport varsity athlete and All-American at Williams College, brings over 25 years of coaching experience to the new Chelsea Piers program. Her coaching experience at both the collegiate and high school levels has resulted in a plethora of “coach of the year” and “hall of fame” awards. For the past 18 years Minicus has been head coach at Darien High School, guiding the girls to multiple FCIAC and Connecticut State championships.
“I am so excited to be partnering with both Chelsea Piers and Emily Townsend Prince,” commented Mo Minicus. “Chelsea Piers is a state of the art facility that will become home to our field hockey players and families. Emily is a coach I have admired and respected for years. Together, we are going to build an incredibly successful field hockey program.”
Coach Townsend Prince is also another example of the complete athlete. Townsend graduated from Princeton in 2003, a three-time NCAA D1 All-American, two-year captain and All Ivy league player. Townsend-Price took her field hockey skills and quickly became a renowned coach throughout Fairfield County. She combines her passion for coaching field hockey with a deep interest in mentoring high school age athletes and helping them navigate the often daunting college admissions process. Through her work in both field hockey and in college guidance at the King School, she has a deep understanding of how to mentor high school students, allowing them to make confident decisions and choices.
“Field Hockey is an incredible sport. We are committed to building a great program with strong foundations,” commented Jeff Brameier, Director of the Field House at Chelsea Piers Connecticut. “With Coaches Minicus and Townsend Prince leading our program, we are confident that we can give all girls interested in field hockey, from novice to college bound, an incredible learning and playing experience.”
Chelsea Piers is the perfect venue for a field hockey program. The Chelsea Piers Field Hockey Club will utilize four competition quality hardwood official field hockey playing surfaces and a full-size Nextfield (rubber fill “free”) turf field for field hockey training. Club players will also participate in CP360, an off-field weekly training program designed to improve an athlete’s physical condition/balance and reduce injury risk.
“I am beyond thrilled to partner with a facility and powerhouse athletic club like Chelsea Piers,” commented Emily Townsend Prince. “In addition, I am teaming up with one of the best coaches ever – Mo Minicus. We all share the vision of supporting girls as they develop skills, both as competitive athletes and compassionate individuals. Our combined visions will allow us to launch and establish a field hockey program that delivers exceptional experiences for players of all ages and abilities.”
The 2018-19 season will launch in September with weekly skill development clinics for girls ages 9-14. Chelsea Piers expects to field clubs for girls age 9-18, with team tryouts scheduled for late November. The competitive club will play an indoor winter season, as well as turf and outdoor play in spring and summer. Skill development clinics and camps will be held throughout the year. The Chelsea Piers Field Hockey Club also expects to host the first-ever Fairfield County indoor play college showcase event in early 2019.
