CHELSEA PIERS CONNECTICUT GIRLS LEADERSHIP CAMP RETURNS FOR A THIRD YEAR

August 10, 2015

(Stamford, CT – August 10, 2015) – Chelsea Piers Connecticut is proud to announce an expanded program for the third year of the Chelsea Piers Girls Leadership Camp summer program. This innovative week-long camp provides female high school athletes with a unique opportunity to develop their individual athletic skills, while also arming them with the tools they need to become strong leaders in all areas of their lives.

Athletes in hockey, soccer or volleyball participate in daily high-level sport training, as well as strength and conditioning programs both on and off the playing surface.  In addition to learning from top-level coaches, athletes learn the meaning of leadership and how it relates to their athletic performance.

Leadership experts in team building direct games that engage camp participants in an exploration of the six leadership principles — wisdom, courage, vision, passion, generosity and trust. Through a series of mentally and physically challenging tasks and exercises, athletes learn cross-functional teamwork and collaboration, leadership without authority techniques, positive communication, assertive decision-making and more.

One of the unique features of the camp is a panel discussion series that allows the campers to interact with accomplished women in the field of sports.  One panel focuses on female leadership, how it has evolved through sports and what it means in their current professions. Panelist include: Dani Rylan, Commissioner of the National Woman’s Hockey League, Sam Faber, professional for the Connecticut Whale, Alanna Locast, Shannon Fay, and Carly Beyar former Fairfield University soccer players and founders of Soccer Girl Problems, and Courtney Carribino, rower for Stanford University. A second panel, sponsored by espnW -- ESPN’s brand for women who love sports -- will give campers the opportunity to hear from Prim Siripipat, an on-air ESPN anchor and former Duke Tennis player. She is also the co-host of espnW’s weekly radio show ‘Spain and Prim’, one of the first national sports radio shows to be hosted and produced by women.

Athletes also attend health and nutrition training seminars for peak performance and a seminar on the ins and outs of college and prep school recruiting.

The camp is sponsored by espnW, Under Armour, Get It Done Consulting and the Fairfield County Community Foundation.

"We are extremely proud of the progress the Chelsea Piers Connecticut Girls Leadership Camp has made over the last three years. Our camp provides young girls with the rare opportunity to develop into leaders both on and off the playing field,” commented Greta Wagner, Executive Director, Chelsea Piers Connecticut.
