How to Set Golf Goals in the New Year
January 5, 2022
It’s a New Year and a new opportunity to set golf goals to improve your game in 2022. We sat down with Head Teaching Professional Steve Bourbon at the Golf Club to learn more about setting realistic and measureable goals. To start, answer the following three questions:
- Why do you play golf?
- What are your golf aspirations?
- Do you have a coach or someone in the golf community to help you achieve your goals/aspirations?
After you answer these three questions, it’s important to understand the three types of goals that you should consider setting. Here’s a quick breakdown on the three types of goals you should set:
- Short-term goals are the ones that you focus on right from the start.
- Medium-term goals are the benchmarks that connect your short-term and long-term goals together.
- Long-term goals give you direction and purpose and should help you grow as a person as well as improve your golf game.
Before you set your three types of goals it is important to follow the four goal setting rules to set yourself up for success.
- Your goals must be specific
- Your goals must be measurable
- Your goals must be realistic
- Your goals must have a timeline
Now that you understand the four goal setting rules and have an idea of what you want to achieve, you can section your goals into short-term, medium-term and long-term segments.
Steve’s final tip is “attitude is everything.” When we think of attitude we usually think of our general demeanor. However, in this case your attitude is your angle of approach. Your perspective is your reality and it is important to remember that good things stem from adversity. As you work toward your goals stay positive, be patient and stay the course.
