KEEP ACTIVE DURING MOVE MORE MONTH

April is National Move More Month. This month and every month we encourage everyone in the family to get out and move a little more!

Created by the American Heart Association to help improve health of Americans everywhere, National Move More Month is aimed at getting more of us to hit 10,000 steps every day or, even better, to hit that 20-minutes of aerobic exercise mark every day.

According to the U.S. Department of Health, kids need 60 minutes of activity every day. An hour might seem like a lot especially when life and school get busy, but it doesn’t have to happen all at once, you can break it up throughout the day.

Here are some ways kids can get active throughout their day:


Before School Activities:

  1. Walk the dog
  2. Do morning stretches or yoga
  3. Dance while you get ready for school
  4. Walk or bike to school (skateboards, scooters, wheelchairs count too)

During School Activities:

  1. Recess – try and encourage active game play on the playground equipment during recess
  2. PE (Gym) Class
  3. No PE or Recess? Try talking to teachers about working on movement breaks into class time when possible.

After School Activities:

  1. Walk or bike home from school
  2. Play a team sport like soccer, basketball, baseball etc.
  3. Sign up for an active afterschool program. Chelsea Piers offers a variety of sports classes year-round for kids of all ages and levels. You can choose from gymnastics, soccer, basketball, ninja, running and many more.
  4. Stay active with friends by riding bikes or playing outside

After Dinner Activities with the Family:

  1. Talk a walk
  2. Start a family dance party
  3. Turn commercial breaks into movement breaks when you are watching your favorite TV show
  4. Play games like catch or kickball that keep you active and engaged
