THE BENEFITS OF WORKING OUT WITH A PARTNER

November 11, 2022

Looking to take your workout to the next level? Turns out working out with a friend or partner has many benefits.

(Even More) Endorphins

Endorphins

Thanks to Elle Woods, we all know that working out gives you endorphins - a natural pain and stress reliever. Another way to release endorphins? By smiling! Working out with a friend or partner = more smiles = more endorphins.

Accountability Buddy

Accountability

Two is better than one when it comes to staying accountable for your workout. It can be easy to skip a trip to the gym when it’s just you… but when you have a friend or partner planning to meet you, there’s a little extra motivation to get your foot out the door! Set up a recurring meeting on your calendars so that you’re both held accountable.

Create a Strong Bond

Strong Bond

Activities that mimic each other’s movement - running at the same pace, passing a medicine ball back and forth, pushups side by side, etc. - can help increase your emotional bond via nonverbal matching, according to Psychology Today

Be More Adventurous

If you tend to stick to one part of the gym, working out with a partner can be a great way to step out of your routine and try something new! Maybe they use a different piece of equipment that you haven’t even thought about trying yet. Our Equipment 101 series on Chelsea Piers Play (our on-demand fitness platform, free for members!) is perfect to help you learn the basics. Or, maybe they can convince you to take that Dance class you’ve been eyeing on the schedule…!
